Nearly 2000 new homes given go ahead in Salford

Salford city planners have today given the go ahead for nearly 2000 new homes as the city’s building boom continues.

Five developments, including one dubbed the biggest residential development in the north west of England, have been given the go ahead to meet demand for new homes in the city.

It brings the total number of homes granted planning permission to over 17,800 alongside an estimated £3.5 billion worth of investment in non-residential developments planned for the city over the next 10 years.

Councillor Derek Antrobus, assistant mayor for strategic planning, said: “New homes and new jobs are great news for us and it also widens the city’s tax base which softens the impact of government grant cuts.”

And City Mayor Ian Stewart added: “Salford is booming. This is a fantastic level of growth and will provide much needed new homes, new jobs, new businesses and opportunities for local residents.”

By the end of March this year, planning permission had been granted for just under 3000 houses and almost 11,000 apartments in the city. Since then permission has been given for another 700 houses and over 3,100 apartments.

The schemes given approval at today’s planning panel are:

Four 26 storey buildings at Salford Quays which will bring 1,100 new residential apartments into the area. The development on land off Michigan Avenue also includes 1,573 sq. m of commercial space for shops and/or community facilities and is being led by X1 Developments and Knight Knox International. It is said to be a £200m investment and will be completed over four phases.

The panel also approved a 300 apartment student accommodation scheme across two blocks of eight and 12 storeys on the site of the Bupa car park off King William Street, Salford Quays.

Approval was also given for a six storey, 145,000 sq ft new office for BUPA on a site known as The Regent, next to Dock 9 and the Erie Basin. Around 2000 staff will relocate from the company’s current offices in the Anchorage and Victoria buildings, protecting and creating new jobs in the area. Construction is expected to start next year.

Over 100 homes – 82 houses and 21 apartments with car parking and landscaping will be built as part of an £11m regeneration scheme at the former Willows Rugby Club site. The scheme is being delivered by Watson Homes and City West Housing Trust.

36 affordable homes will be provided as part of 179 two to four bedroom houses planned for Burgess Farm, Worsley.

Bellway Homes scheme will provide 140 new homes in Monton at the former Mitchell Shackleton Vulcan engineering works.

On the former Vita site, Seaford Road, Rock Asset Management is to deliver 80 new homes in a development worth £7.5m.
