Monton is the Chorlton of Salford.
Apart from the fact that it isn’t, BECAUSE IT’S BETTER. Chorlton is basically Eccles but full of in-denial hipsters.
Seventies shopping centre? Check. Massive Morrisons? Check. Tram stop? Check. Overarching presence of scallies? Check. But anyway.
Along with the recent uptick in house prices and the appearance of beards and topknots in the local Tesco Express, Monton has also witnessed a quiet revolution in its food and drink offering.
It’s not quite there yet – but some of the newer names have raised the bar and a few of the older businesses have opted for a spruce up.
6/Cut Pizza used to be Felicini’s, one of two whole restaurants you were likely to find on Monton Road a few years back.
Out with the old though, and as well as a smart new paint job from the Mud Crab brand, the menu has been given a bit of an overhaul as well.
Pizzas are now made with sourdough bases and big sharing boards are on offer too. A decent draught IPA tops up the fairly standard drinks offer. For the best beer in the village, wander down to Malt Dog afterwards.
Traditional pizza favourites like margherita mushroom sit alongside more outlandish offerings such as chorizo and balsamic red onion, pulled pork hash and fully loaded nachos (crisps on a pizza? Hmm…).
Between four of us, two pizzas – Moroccan spiced lamb and margherita – more than did the trick, so it ticks the boxes of ‘good places to take kids’ and ‘places that won’t break the bank’.
Add a metal mug of chips and a green salad and you’ve fed the family for about £25.
The pizzas were good, too. Sourdough bases are nothing new – in fact, many of the early pizza makers used sourdough: it gives you a better crust.
But if the likes of 6/cut want to revive a lost art in suburbs like Monton, all the better.
Just watch. They’ll probably start doing it in Chorlton now.
