New descriptions: Thousands stolen in Salford cash van robbery

Police have issued descriptions of two armed men who threatened a security guard stealing thousands from a cash-in-transit van in Higher Broughton, Salford.

SalfordOnline.com broke the news of the robbery on Thursday 16 July.

At 10.40am that morning, two men armed with a baseball bat and a sledgehammer ran up to a security guard near the B&M Bargains store on Basten Drive, off Great Cheetham Street East.

They threatened the guard with violence and, fearing for his life, he dropped the cash box and ducked back inside the store before the men ran away towards Rigby Street.

He was not hurt in the incident but was left extremely shaken.

A spokesperson for the force told SalfordOnline.com a four-figure sum had been stolen.

Police cordoned off an area of the street for around two hours while they conducted their enquiries.

They now believe the men escaped on pedal bikes.

The first man is described as being white, wearing a dark blue hooded top and a light blue baseball cap. He had his face covered and wore grey jogging bottoms.

The second man was white and wore black bottoms and a grey hooded top.

Detective Sergeant Wendy Grace said: “When the staff member was approached and threatened, he did the right thing in dropping the cash box.  We are now determined to find those responsible and would ask anyone who may have seen two men fitting the descriptions given to call us.”
