Family devastated by ‘mistaken identity’ petrol bomb attack on Kingsford Street, Salford

Two men on a moped flung a flaming bottle at the front door of a house in a Salford arson attempt, police have confirmed this morning.

SalfordOnline.com broke the news on Monday this week how a man and his young son were left terrified by the attack, which happened at around 11.30pm on Sunday 26 July on Kingsford Street in Weaste, Salford.

A force spokesperson said: “A family were targeted in an arson attack in Salford.

“Two men on a moped pulled up outside a house on the street. The passenger got off the bike and set fire to rag stuffed into a bottle, causing it to ignite.

“The bottle was then thrown at the front door of the property, causing damage to the door.

“The two men then drove away from the scene on the moped.”

The man and his son escaped through the back door of the house while a neighbour stepped in to put out the flames.

The two offenders were wearing dark clothing and motorbike helmets at the time of the arson attack.

Detective Constable Andrew Quinn, based at Pendleton police station, said: “If it wasn’t for the swift actions of a neighbour who quickly extinguished this fire, then this incident could have been far worse.

“Neither the police nor the occupants of this house are aware of any reason that could have driven someone to do this.

“One of our lines of enquiry is that this could be a case of mistaken identity, but in any case, this attack has left the residents of this address and also neighbouring properties absolutely devastated.

“We are making enquiries to identify the two individuals responsible and are appealing to the public for their help.

“If anyone saw these two men acting suspiciously on the moped, either before or after the attack, on neighbouring streets, then please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at Pendleton police station on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
