Swinton thief pretends to have cancer to rob elderly woman

Police in Swinton are warning local residents to be alert after a man pretended to have cancer to steal from an elderly woman in her own home.

The incident occurred on Monday 5 October at an address in Stafford Road, Swinton.

The man knocked on her door asking for a drink of water, saying that he was terminally ill.

She kindly invited him in for a glass of water before he sat down, helped himself to a drink of orange juice and a cup of tea and even watched television.

He then pretended to use the toilet and stole her purse before making off through the front door.

The man is described as being ehite, 40-50 years old with shaved dark hair, stubble, a protruding jaw, a northern accent and possibly no teeth.

GMP Salford West posted on Facebook: “Please be vigilant, do not allow strangers into your house under false pretences and share this info with your elderly friends and relatives.”

Anyone with any information, or who has been subject to a similar theft, is asked to call Greater Manchester Police on 101.
