Shock as clothing retailer Dunnes Stores in Salford to close down today

Irish clothing retailer Dunnes Stores is to close its branch in Salford on Friday 22 January.

It’s understood staff were given seven days’ notice that the branch, at Regent Retail Park off Regent Road, would close for good.

It’s due to close its doors for the final time on Friday evening.

Management have refused to confirm or deny the news.

The move throws fresh scrutiny on the retailer after a series of shock closures over the past 12 months.

In August 2015 Dunnes announced the closure of three of its Northern Irish branches at Antrim, Ballymoney and Portadown in as many weeks.

A branch in Bradford was closed suddenly “with immediate effect” in February 2015, announced only with a sign to customers on its locked gates.

In November 2015 Dunnes’ flagship Park Centre Belfast store was shut with the loss of 50 jobs.

At its height the Irish firm ran more than 100 outlets in England, Scotland, Spain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

But Dunnes is now the third-largest supermarket in Ireland by market share.

The Salford store is no longer listed on the Dunnes Stores website.
