Two charged with murder of homeless Daniel Smith in Salford

Two men have been charged with the murder of 23-year-old Daniel Smith in Salford.

Daniel’s body was found in a burning tent under a railway bridge near the New Bailey car park on Wednesday 20 January.

10 people, including two 16-year-old boys, were arrested as part of the investigation.

A post-mortem revealed the extent of the multiple injuries Daniel suffered before he died.

Today two men have been charged with his murder.

Adam Acton and Luke Benson, both 25 and of no fixed address, appeared before magistrates and were remanded in custody.

Detectives said that despite the charges there was “much more to do” and said they would continue the murder probe.

The pair will appear at Manchester Crown Court on Friday 29 January 2016.

Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team said: “A lot of work has been done with regards to this investigation and we have made quite a large number of arrests but there is still much more to do.

“We have had quite a good response from the public to this appeal and I would like to continue to ask for their invaluable support and urge anybody with information to please come forward.”
