Beechfield United’s Saturday Morning Senior Team played their first Division 1 match of 2016 when they travelled to meet Alkrington Dynamos knowing it would be a difficult ninety minutes.
On an artificial surface Alkrington started much stronger and facing some heavy pressure United were rescued by goalkeeper Declan Oliver who produced two brilliant saves to keep it at 0-0.
Slowly Beechy found a better rhythm and pushing hard to take the lead were eventually rewarded with the opening goal when Roy Owen had a one-on-one with the keeper who made a fine save but the ball fell kindly to Scott Foulds who followed up the rebound and fired the ball into the net.
Alkrington however immediately hit back and equalised thanks to a brilliant finish from 30 yards making it 1-1 at the interval.
In the second half the match was end-to-end with both teams full committeed as they strived for the three points and it was a stroke of luck that won Beechy the match.
Full back Andy Lord’s free kick that was deemed a cross was misjudged by the Alkrington keeper and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
As expected Alkrington heaped pressure on Beechy as they searched for an equaliser but United produced some great defending and always looked dangerous on the counter attack.
Wes Pierce who had an excellent ninety minutes was voted Man of the Match.
