Barton Road to reopen Friday – but more roadworks to hit Eccles and Salford

A series of roadworks starting on Monday will hit drivers in Salford and Eccles.

Barton Road, a major link route between Eccles and the Trafford Centre, is due to re-open on Friday 24 June after more than four months of delayed roadworks.

Work started in February and was supposed to be completed by the end of May to widen and repair towpaths alongside the Bridgewater Canal, which runs parallel to Barton Road.

Salford City Council blamed utility companies for the delay after they failed to divert underground cables before work started.

Diversions along Peel Green Road from Liverpool Road have caused rush-hour misery for drivers, with buses further delayed by the change of route.

According to the council all the work will be completed by Friday and Barton Road will re-open.

This Sunday: Eccles Metrolink line will close entirely for 9 weeks

Elsewhere in Salford, parts of Eccles New Road and Langworthy Road South will come under traffic orders this weekend as workers lay down new sections of Metrolink track.

Temporary signals will be installed from Monday 27 June and delays are expected as left and right-turn bans are put in place along Eccles New Road.

Langworthy Road South will become one-way for some of the nine weeks needed to make the track replacements.

More information is expected from Urban Vision closer to the time.

Major repairs are underway to a culvert in danger of collapsing on the northern section of Barton Road, which runs between Winton and Worsley towards the M60 Junction 13 roundabout.

Temporary traffic lights were installed near to the junctions of Stablefold Lane and Granary Lane on Monday 20 June and are now operating 9.30am to 3.30pm

The lights are expected to be in place for three months.

Finally, from next Monday 27 June bus lanes running eastbound and westbound along the A756 Eccles Old Road will be suspended for nine weeks.

It means cars will be able to access both lanes during this time.

The idea is that this will reduce congestion around Salford Royal Hospital while allowing council officers to gather useful data on traffic flow in an extremely busy area.

The bus lanes are expected (at this stage) to reopen by 15 August.
