Police swarmed onto New Hall Avenue in Peel Green last night after residents reported the sound of a gun going off.
Six cars and a police tactical aid van were scrambled to the street at around 10.10pm on Sunday 28 June.
The suspect was seen jumping over back gardens with something in his hand before running off in the direction of the AJ Bell Stadium.
One eyewitness said: “I heard what I thought was a shotgun going off and I turned to my partner and said, ‘Bloody hell, did you hear that?’ We didn’t know what it was, it was like the sound of a big door slamming.
“I thought nothing of it until about 10 minutes later when police were swarming all over the street.
“I could see there was an 07-plate Ford Mondeo left abandoned in the street with its lights on and the door left wide open.
“There are some new houses being built on the road and we think he was hiding in there before running off towards the stadium.”
A police source confirmed no firearm had been used or found at the scene.
“A young man had tried to break into a house using a hammer, which would explain the loud bang residents heard.
“We believe this to be domestic-related.”
Officers stayed on New Hall Avenue until around midnight to tow the car and make the scene safe.
No arrests have yet been made.
