Plans to build a disabled access ramp at Irlam Station are heading down a different track.
The initial plan was to build step-free access to the Liverpool-bound platform with funding from the Cycle City Ambition Grant.
To build the ramp the council needed to buy land from an industrial unit next to the station – but because the business is booming a deal could not be reached.
The owners said they were fully supportive of plans but as a rapidly expanding company they need the land for storage and parking.
However, step free access to Irlam Station remains a priority for Salford City Council and its partners and they have already started to discuss alternative options.
Councillor Roger Jones, Assistant Mayor for Transport and the City Region at Salford City Council, said: “This has come as a real blow as providing disabled access at Irlam Station is a key priority for us.
“However, we won’t give up and our next step will be to meet with Network Rail to explore other ways to improve accessibility at Irlam Station.”
The Cycle City Ambition Grant will now be spent on other cycling improvements in Salford.
