Thunder and lightning predicted for Saturday evening actually arrived, in a coup for disparaged weather forecasters everywhere.
By around 7pm on Saturday 22 August, rumbling thunder brought a few brief flashes of lightning, the high temperatures throughout the day following on to a muggy evening, and storms breaking.
Whole swathes of the city saw strong rainfall, in Monton, Ellenbrook, Kersal and Irlam.
The dreaded ‘Spanish plume’ returned – essentially warm, humid air moving slowly north from the continent.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather alert this evening in Salford, warning of localised flooding, gusty winds and the possibility of lightning and hail.

There’s nothing yet, however, to suggest a night of lightning storms as epic as the one we saw in July.
