Priceless brass candlesticks stolen in Salford burglary

A 60-year-old woman is appealing for the return of a pair of 170-year-old brass candlesticks that were stolen in a burglary in Higher Broughton.

Thieves broke in to her house in the early hours of Tuesday 17 August, by removing a kitchen window from its hinges.

Once inside they stole the 15-inch high candleholders, along with a large quantity of silverware.

The victim has asked to remain anonymous.

“They aren’t worth anything for someone to sell, but they are priceless to me,” she told SalfordOnline.com.

Similar pieces are being sold on eBay for just a few pounds.

“They belonged to my great grandmother and have been in the family for over 160 years, so they are of great sentimental value,” she said.

“I feel violated by this and I am still in a state of shock.”

The gold-coloured candlesticks are thought to date back to the mid-19th century.

It’s possible they are engraved on the inside with the numbers 521128.

Also taken in the robbery were a 40-year-old silver candlabra given as a wedding gift, a silver cup, plate, spice holder and candle holder set, which are around 40 years old, silver plaques and silver cutlery that has also been in the family for around 100 years.

Police are asking people to be alert if they have been offered any silverware or brass candlesticks recently, and to check new stock at pawn shops.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Greater Manchester Police on 101.
