Arrest made following City Centre assault appeal

Police investigating a serious assault in Manchester City Centre have made an arrest.

Yesterday, Thursday 4 September 2015, officers arrested a 19-year-old man from Leeds on suspicion of Section 18 Assault. He has now been bailed until 22 October 2015 pending further enquiries.

This is in relation to an incident on Sunday 16 August 2015 when police were called to Great Marlborough Street, Manchester to reports that a man had been seriously assaulted.

Officers attended and found a 24-year-old man with serious head injuries who was then taken to hospital where he had to undergo emergency surgery and remains in a serious condition.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the assault which is believed to have taken place sometime between 2.20am and 2.30am opposite the junction of Great Marlborough Street and New Wakefield Street, close to The Ritz nightclub.

It is believed that a number of men assaulted the victim and made their way down New Wakefield Street towards Oxford Road.

It has been established that the victim had been to The Ritz nightclub with friends and the assault took place after the victim left the club alone to make his way home.

DS Mark Astbury said: “I would like to thank members of the public who have so far come forward following our appeal and assisted with our enquiries.

“As a result of this information, we have made an arrest but the investigation continues and I would like to continue to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please contact us as soon as possible.”

Anybody with information should contact the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0161 856 3221 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
