Salford resdients aged over 50 are being celebrated in the city today at a special event to mark Older People’s Day.
Older People’s Day takes place each year on Thursday 1 October to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Older Persons.
A free event is on at Buile Hill Park until 3pm to celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to society and the economy through volunteering.
Spreading the message that age is no barrier to being involved in community life, Older People’s Day challenges the negative stereotypes so often associated with old age and encourages people to get active in later life.
Every day, older people across Salford are making the most of their time and energy by organising community activities, volunteering, helping out family and friends, and generally contributing to society and to the economy.
Dr Jennifer Walton GP at The Lakes Medical Centre in Swinton and clinical lead for integrated care and community based care at Salford CCG said: “More than any other group in society, older people are the social glue of most communities.
“Our Older Peoples Day event is an opportunity for both Salford CCG and the Council to not only show our appreciation for all that they do, but also to highlight the opportunities out there for them through volunteering.”
